For some reason Austrians seem to eat only green splint peas. To be fair I had no idea either that there are things like yellow, white or black peas. But most Indian recipes mix their split peas with turmeric and it looks kinda yuck if you mix green peas with yellow powder.

It took me a while to organize some yellow split peas. And once I found a (slightly weird and smelly) store that sold these things the smallest amount I could buy was 2 kilos!!! So be prepared for plenty of yellow split pea recipes!



  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.25 cups onions [chopped]
  • 1 tablespoon garlic [chopped]
  • 0.5 teaspoons fresh oregano [chopped]
  • 0.5 teaspoon fresh thyme [chopped]
  • 0.5 cups dried yellow split peas
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 0.5 teaspoons lemon zest
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • hot sauce [optional]
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil


_ heat oil in a saucepan

_ saute onion until soft

_ add garlic for another minute

_ add oregano, thyme, peas and water

_ bring to a boil

_ simmer until peas are tender

_ remove from heat and add lemon zest, salt and lemon juice

_ cool to room temperature

_ blend or mash with a potato masher

_ add hot sauce or more salt if necessary

_ serve drizzled with olive oil
