Every country and most bars make slight adaptations to the classic cocktails. But there are slight adaptations and then there is Khmer people making cocktails. And I’m saying this with a slightly drunken grin on my face. For the fact that I have never seen a Khmer person drink a cocktail – only beer – they make kick-ass cocktails. 4 bucks and about twice as much alcohol as the recipe says. I’m usually a margarita girl but whenever I ordered one in PhnomPenh it was just pure tequila with a pinch salt.
But I found another treat! You will have a hard time finding milk or any kind of milk product in Cambodia. Khmer cheese is some kind of tofu – took me a while to figure that out. But they love sweet condensed milk (made out of vegetable oil – no milk involved here either). So naturally they don’t have cream to make a white russian either. No problem there – they just use condensed milk instead – insanely delicious! A new cocktail was born – and so much better than the original.
